I’ve got the Nesco. Paid more than $100 for it last summer due to Covid surge pricing, but so far it’s been working well. I needed it then to help freeze a bumper crop of golden raspberries, and it worked well for that, also for dealing with good prices on food at Costco (where, BTW, you can get a good deal on a LARGE Read more

I love unorthodox screens and uses of monitor mounts. I had mounted a dollar-store 8x12" framed corkboard/whiteboard onto a spare monitor stand’s VESA mount, which worked great for post-its and leaving (and receiving!) quick, persistent notes, like TODOs or when I was stepping away from my desk.

I did something similar with my ultrawide, but I went with a small 8" DisplayLink screen in portrait mode, running a custom Dakboard configuration with datetime, my calendars, and weather.

I can’t stand doing work on an ultrawide for some reason, so gave it back to work. Waiting on release of 32" OLED so I can upgrade the dual 1440P 32"s that I run now. Read more

I’m away from my gaming PC at the moment and only have a laptop to fall back on. That said two games I like so far are Torchlight 2 (the first one was good also) and Globesweeper.

Ah! fair enough, I had kind of forgotten the ‘underrated’ criteria of your list ;)

I personally loved that game. It had that Arkham Knight style combat but if it wasn’t branded Mad Max it would have felt like a spiritual successor to Twisted Metal.

It doesn’t get mentioned much because the overall story tends to overshadow it, but one of my favourite aspects was the nature of the melee kills. They start off quick and efficient, but by the end of the game they’re brutal curb stomps, and accompanied by comments like “just f***ing DIE!” from Walker. The progression Read more

Space Marine is great fun. Especially the co-op mode, if you can get some like-minded friends together.

Will throw my hat in on Sleeping Dogs as well. Still a solid looking game, well acted and engaging story, and the fighting system is slightly deeper than most for this genre.

That Spec Ops is super under-rated. My sons school used that in their Media/Gaming class and everyone was amazed at its flow. The ethical and moral focal points were the main reason why they found it intriguing. It’s definitely not for everyone especially if they’re thinking they’re getting COD xxx : Guns and more. Picked a pair up before Christmas as Costco for 85 bucks. I’m a big fan. They are pretty awesome for consuming media but are definitely not a replacement for studio monitors (if someone actually needs flat sound for music production).

FWIW, I set it up (got it on Xmas, technically) and after a lot of futzing with the settings, especially on the Xbone (there was massive latency until I fiddled enough), I got it working.
While trying to get rid of the latency, I had to A/B a lot with the TV speakers and omg, what a difference. Yeah, I don’t know if Read more

Though we have a proper receiver and surround setup in the living room, in the bedroom we just have the Vizio 2.0 Soundbar. I was blown away by how good it sounds considering the size and price.

I’ve always had a cheap soundbar (~$100) and that was a huge improvement over the TV speakers. The Studio Advance by Definitive Technology soundbar is my current and long-term setup.  Its expensive, but holy shit was it worth it.

Also extremely annoying is that they list the 4K version as a different listing when it is available as opposed to a playback option.  I get that they may want to charge more for the 4K version, but every other place that I have rented 4K movies from seems to have figured out how to have one page with options for Read more

Just putting this out there. If you want your 4k TV to SCREAM WITH PLEASURE, go for Atomic Blonde. You will not be disappointed. On the other hand, I was actually disappointed with The Matrix transfer.
