Good question! I see far too many big desks made out of doors or Ikea Karlby countertops that are sagging under the weight, and more people need to know how to combat that. I used some anti-sag stiffeners screwed into the underside—two, to be exactand it’s kept the desk very sturdy. I wrote about the full desk build at Read more

Those are the HS50M studio monitors. I think that specific model is discontinued but was replaced by the similar HS5. (I use them in conjunction with a Dayton 8-inch subwoofer to fill out the low end.) Read more

Yeah, the stock is really low on this one, so a lot of times you get third-party sellers hawking it for a huge markup. Wait for it to come back in stock at MSRP, it’s worth it! Read more

I almost included Shadow of Mordor on this list except it got a pretty decent amount of attention when it came out, so it didn’t quite fit in with the others. But yes, I had so much fun with that game. Way better than I expected. Read more

I owned those Klipsch ProMedia speakers for years and loved them. When they broke, I replaced them with some studio monitors, but sometimes I still think about going back to them to save some space on my desk. Interesting; I’ll have to check it out. I’m skeptical, especially given a lot of people (including myself) do not have a room with symmetrical walls on either side to “bounce” side-firing sounds off of, but color me intrigued. Read more

I don’t usually link to my work at other publications, but for the sake of brevity in this comment, I’m going to do so—I’ve written about this delay issue at length here.

Yes! Great point! It may give you a bit of extra height, but you won’t get the full effect with vaulted or textured ceilings. That’s where that Yamaha or similar Sony bars can come in handy, since they use virtual processing rather than up-firing drivers—though that usually comes at the expense of sound quality.

Samsung’s high-end soundbars, in terms of sound, do sound better than most other soundbars out there. But I have a big problem with the surround versions, at least the ones I’ve used in the past.

Yeah, that’s what I meant about their search being terrible--4K being a separate listing is just nonsensical, and has been a source of frustration for me on many occasions.
