Nobody knows software better than our friends at Lifehacker, and Humble’s making it easy to augment your PC with a name-your-own-price bundle of some of the site’s favorite Windows apps.
We’ve broken it all down below, with links to Lifehacker to help you learn more about the software. Just remember that like most Humble Bundles, certain apps require you to pledge more money than others, so be sure you’re paying enough to get all of the apps you need.
Breevy | Spend $1+
Windows: Breevy, on its own, is a capable utility that can replace text snippets and launch applications from short typed phrases. It’s even more useful to dual Windows and Mac users, as it can share those snippets with TextExpander on Macs.
Fences 3.0 + DeskScapes | Spend $1+
Windows: DeskScapes provides you with a collection of hundreds of animated wallpapers. You can also add animated effects to existing wallpapers. This can involve adding birds in the sky of a photo you love or stylizing any image in various ways.
Windows: Fences is one of the best apps for creating a clean, organized desktop, and it just got better with version 2.0. Now you can create fences for specific folders anywhere on your computer, as well as swipe between different “pages” of fences.
Directory Opus 12 Light | Spend $1+
Windows Explorer has gotten a few touch-ups and improvements in Windows 7, 8, and again in Windows 10, but it has yet to see a massive overhaul. Directory Opus, on the other hand, brings a ton of features we wish were native in Windows to your PC in a single installation. Multi-paned file displays, in-window previews, the ability to root out duplicate files, and tons of keyboard shortcuts turn a seemingly simple tool into a swiss-army knife of features that improve your Windows experience. - Lifehacker E.I.C Alan Henry
DisplayFusion (Pro or Steam) | Beat the Average Price
Editor’s Note: Read more about the differences between the direct download and Steam versions here.
...if you use multiple monitors, DisplayFusion Pro is a must have piece of software (if you only use one monitor, you can probably skip this one). Windows’ multi-monitor support got better in Windows 8, but it’s nowhere near as powerful as DisplayFusion. With it, you can manage your multi-monitor wallpaper, gives you hotkeys to move windows between monitors or change their opacity, adds extra titlebar buttons, more window snapping features (though you won’t need them, since you’ll use Divvy!), and a ton of other stuff. You can get a few of these features with the free version of DisplayFusion, but all the good stuff comes with a $25 pro license, so if you use multiple monitors in your setup, DisplayFusion Pro is absolutely worth the price. It’ll make you feel like your computer was actually meant to have multiple monitors.
LastPass - 1 Year Subscription (New Members Only) | Beat the Average Price
My how times have changed. Several years ago, our new winner would never have landed in the top spot, but this time around, LastPass took the pennant with over 43% of the votes cast. It’s cross-platform, flexible, easy to use, and affordable at $12/yr for premium. You have the option to sync your passwords online and across devices, or manage your passwords offline on your own, and thanks to LastPass’ Trust No One approach to security, you’re the only one who can decrypt your vault.
CyberGhost VPN - 1 Year Subscription (New Members Only) | Beat the Average Price
Windows: CyberGhost VPN is a free utility that encrypts, anonymizes, and offshores your internet use when you’re using public Wi-Fi at an airport or coffee shop, or you’re worried someone on your network is running a tool like Firesheep to gather credentials.
Acronis True Image - 1 Year Subscription | Pay $15+
Whether you manage a single computer or several, the most time-consuming thing about getting a new one, or even upgrading or replacing a hard drive, is migrating all of your data. One way to make the process easier is to take a full snapshot of your drive, including all of your data, programs, and settings, save it, and then image your new drive as a complete copy of the old one. Acronis True Image lets you do just that, in a matter of clicks. Lots of apps let you image your drives, but this is one of the easiest to use, and the most widely compatible. - Lifehacker E.I.C Alan Henry
Bitdefender Antivirus Plus - 1 Year Subscription (For Up to Three PCs) | Pay $15+
If you don’t mind spending a little money, Kaspersky and BitDefender both offer top-quality paid products. Kaspersky took home AV Comparatives Product of the Year award for 2015, tying with BitDefender for overall best product. BitDefender won the same award in 2014, but AV Comparatives doesn’t give the award to any product that’s one in a previous year. Technically, this makes them both the best overall.
