Hue
Widely available, DOES NOT RUN OR PILL, lotsa colors, sizes fit great. I wear them every day, the way that other people wear pants, so I demand a whole lotta mileage outta my tights, and Hue Super Opaque are my #1 best. (Regular Opaque for hot weather, or for layering under other tights. Ultimate Opaque / Blackout for chillier weather.) - hallelujah
Yeesss. They are more durable than any other brand I’ve bought too. The Absolute Opaque ones in black are a staple, and I love that they have seasonal colors. Sometimes I wish they had all the funky colors year round, but then I guess I wouldn’t get to stock up after the seasonal clearance. - panUNDEADdroid7
Target Merona
I don’t know if they’re the best, but they’re easy to find and cheap, so my fave tights are the double pack of Merona black tights from Target. $14/2, so I don’t feel bad when I snag them which is a given because I am a klutz. Also, the L/XL are plenty long enough for my 34” inseam while still staying opaque and I don’t feel like they fall down throughout the day. - CEFADlovah
Yeah, I bought a few pairs of Merona tights in bright colors and they lasted me two or three winters, and the fit was good (could pull up over the belly). I’d love to try We Love Colors or whatever but if they can’t guarantee they’ll last for years, I’m going to just keep buying these for ~$6. - Stranger Bird
Only tights I own! The pair I have worn for a year consistently when I wanted black tights is still going strong today! I have 3 more pairs I bought on sale. I am not even careful when I wash them either. I throw them in with everything else (well, not bras) and they are fine. - colorisnteverything
We Love Colors (also on WeLoveColors.com)
I received two pairs of We Love Colors tights for my twenty-sixth birthday. I am now twenty-eight, and neither pair has any holes. Okay, the turquoise ones have a small run, but compare that to my typical tights experience, in which holes develop within the first wearing, and it looks pretty damn good. What also looks good: the tights themselves. They come in 51 solid colors and a number of patterns, and are pretty and fun, especially when the weather is neither. Turquoise unexpectedly goes with everything. I also have olive green, and I’m on the point of picking up a few more. - Anna North
They come in over fifty colors, are super vibrant, and have a huge sizing range, with sizes able to fit people from 90 - 375 lbs. - Mackie
I order 10 or so every other month. I really don’t wear pants- so I wear tights nearly every day for work/going out. They have two seams on the back to help maintain fit. They are comfortable, and have a high waisted fit. I have tried so many kinds of plus size tights and these are the best. Million Stars! I think it’s like a dance clothing supplier or something...So many colors. but! their fishnets are boring/not worth it. - assratss
Wolford (also on Wolford Shop)
I keep a rotation of about five pairs of Wolford tights, varying in thickness and color (although my preference is either black Velvet de Luxe 66 or Mat Opaque 80). It’s a practice I began back in 2007, when I purchased my first pair—which finally just got a run in them last week. They lasted five fucking years. Can you believe that? And I haven’t been kind to them, either. I’ve traveled in them, crawled around on floors (don’t ask!) in them, literally walked miles in them without shoes, and even subjected them to my annoying-ass dog who jumps up on me and scratches at my legs whenever I walk through the door. That’s a lot of wear with no tear. - Tracie Egan Morrissey
These are much higher end than the beloved (but great value for the $) Hue tights. These feel a lot smoother (I could not stop feeling my legs when I bought two pairs last winter), and are much better made. They aren’t that thick, but feel warmer and look more opaque than a sub $20 pair. You are definitely getting more quality for the higher price in this brand. Wolford has different lines (depending on the denier). You can go thicker or thinner than this particular, but I think the 66 is great for a cold winter. Wolford also makes a bunch of patterned tights that are much more fabulous than the plain ones. - star lilies
Bonus: Wolford Stay-Ups
Man, I hate tights. They squeeze my stomach and make me feel nauseous, are a pain to deal with when I have to pee, and never feel that great. BUT I LOVE STOCKINGS. Specifically, the Velvet De Luxe Stay-Ups from Wolford. They are soooooo soft and silky, never droop or sag, nice and opaque so they’re good for the winter — I just love them. Plus, they make me feel like I have a sexy secret all day long. WIN. - spotbotted
Dressbarn
OK, so I love love love Dressbarn for tights (and a lot of other stuff, including wrap dresses and rain hats, but I digress...). Personally, I could probably fit into the non-plus size ones, but I like to have some breathing room, so I tend to go for the 1x/2x. For reference, I am six foot and h/w proportionate, skinnier legs, and thicker in the middle.
I like these tights because they fit well and I can pull them up to my bra, so they are almost like built in spanx. They are usually priced 2 for $18, but you can always find a 20% off coupon online. HOWEVER, I stalk the Dressbarn Web site’s clearance section, and I found them on sale last summer, marked down from $9 a pair to $2.90 (!!!!!!!). I bought 40 pairs. I live in New England, so I pretty much wear tights from September until May.

The styles I like the most (in order of preference):
- The heathered tights. I swear, these are so, so soft, and so comfortable. When I play outside in the winter, I wear these under my snowpants. I’ve fallen asleep in them and slept comfortably, even.
- The plain black opaque tights. General purpose, hold up really well, nice and smooth.
- Their patterned tights. Not as comfy as the two above, but I just love patterned tights. They tend not to hold up as well to tugging as the heathered and opaque ones do, but I still get my money’s worth out of them.
For the record, their pantyhose is good too. I especially like the nude and off-black. - Hurrikate
