Yeah, because being remote enough that you’d need an airevac in an emergency isn’t backcountry. And if you think a river trip is bougie, you certainly have no idea what I’m talking about. Read more

Yeah, you’re right, that’s definitely stupid. Conspicuous consumption knows no bounds. My hobbies and former life in a town where extended field work is common leaves me knowing a ton of people who actually make good use of them (myself included on occasion), which is the only place I’ve ever seen them put to use. I could rephrase and simply say 99% of the people who buy these things represents the dumbest trend ever which is really what I was getting at.  Everyone I know who owns one uses it for a 4 hour afternoon of softball to keep bottled water cold.  They could have bought an Igloo and it would have worked exactly the same. Spend a week self-supporting in the field/on a boat, then call me when your food isn’t safe to eat because your cheap grocery store igloo failed to perform. For the average person’s cooler use, it’s absolutely not worth the money. But when circumstances require performance, it certainly is. Read more

These $300 -$700 coolers is one of the dumbest trends ever. I’ve seen scientific tests showing no difference (or maybe a couple hours difference) between a cheap igloo and a $400 Yeti. Same with the $50 tumblers. Stop buying this crap.

Heh, yeah... “As statements go, one of those would make a helluva nice paperweight.” was my second thought, after my first thought was “It’d be cool to make something with that...” and then a little voice in the back of my head replied “Oh sure, because you’ve done so much with all the material you already have!” ┐(シ)┌

I have a ton of Ryobi stuff — wore out the original little 5" circular saw, have nearly worn out the sawsall, just bought a hammer drill, even have a lawn edger — but for any serious work I’d want a corded worm or hypoid drive over a sidewinder. I recently got a Makita Magnesium, and it’s like cutting butter. Read more

The Milwaukee stuff is surprisingly good, and their chargers do both 12V and 18v tools. I like the Hacks-All or whatever they call it. Mini reciprocating saw. Flies through all kinds of wallboard. The 12V driver is a nice size, more than the light duty 8V, but not a 18/20V monster with a 5aH battery. Ryobi has a Read more

Or the Milwaukee, the Ridgid, the Makita, hell, even the Ryobi. They are all pretty decent right now. I had to build a freaking charger caddy because I get donated tools at work and I have the 4V,8V,12V,18V and 20V of almost all of these. My battery bin look likes freaking Bennetton. That said, the one tool I love the Read more
