Whether your plans include table service at a hotel bar or a raucous house party at a friend-of-a-friend’s penthouse apartment, here at SG HQ we always recommend stepping up your game on New Year’s Eve. There’s really no better occasion to dress beyond your comfort zone. The easiest way to do that for guys? A blazer that’s willing to command more attention than your usual suiting. Something, dare we say, a little jazzy?
We found an array of ringing-in-2019-worthy blazers in shades of deep purple (oh, yes), raspberry red, and even a few NYE-worthy patterns, too. Join us in our sartorial resolution (or is it revolution?) to never play the wallflower again.
Below, six blazers to help you kick off the new year the way you mean to live it—with style.
For under $100, you really can’t beat this Topman double-breasted jacket in a gorgeous dark shade of teal. The shawl collar adds a further touch of formality. This is a jacket you can wear with your “nice pants” or with a pair of black jeans for NYE and still feel appropriately festive. Add a boldly printed button-up shirt for extra style points.
Double-breasted and velvet? Come on! This bright green jacket from ASOS Design will definitely draw attention, so make it worth partygoers’ while. Since the lapels button up rather high for a double-breasted suit, we say skip the tie and go for an unusual and colorful bowtie instead.
When we say blazer, we mean a formal jacket that can stand alone without a matching suit pant. This black-and-silver floral tuxedo jacket from Express, for instance, would look way over-the-top with matching pants. On its own, however, it gives us serious Chuck Bass-circa-Gossip Girl season three vibes in all the right ways (minus the problematic ‘selling your girlfriend for a hotel’ storyline).
Pair it with classic black tuxedo trousers and a bow tie for a fully formal getup. All that’s left is to choose between crisp white sneakers for dancing the night away and patent brogues for the complete black tie rig.
Take a page from the book of stylish stars like Armie Hammer, Matthew McConaughey, and Eddie Redmayne and pull on a luxe velvet blazer this NYE. The slim fit, deep navy hue of this Bonobos number definitely err on the subtle side of “extra,” which is a good thing when you’re looking to drop half a G on a jacket. You can wear this one with suit pants to weddings and parties throughout the year, if that helps you vote yes on the splurge.
Want your New Year’s look to telegraph to the world that you got kicked out of the best East Coast boarding school old money could buy and your mom’s name is Muffy? (Or at least, it could be.) We love the cheerful, colorful Wes Anderson-esque stripes on this Rowing Blazers jacket. It would look amazing with a pair of slim cut cords or chinos, a crisp white shirt and leather penny loafers.
Where are all our splashiest guys? If you want to go completely “money is no object and I simply must have the best” over-the-top with your New Year’s Eve party look, might we suggest this Ralph Lauren Purple Label velvet tuxedo jacket? Sure it costs almost $5000, but can you really put a price on being the absolute, undisputed without-a-doubt best-dressed man of 2019?
