There are an infinite number of hair styling products out there, and to further complicate matters, designations like pomade, gel, cream, and paste are by no means consistent across brands. What I look for in a styling product is a non-crunchy, non-greasy, quick-drying, easy to wash out, easy to work with product with a reliable but malleable hold. I’ve put a lot of stuff in my hair to test in the past 18 months, and this what I’d want to use again. Updating forever...
From my favorite salon comes one of my favorite styling products. Rudy’s pomade trio is simple, easy to choose from, and easy to wear. Matte is my fave.
Maapilim’s got my favorite line of beard care products, and their Hair Paste offers one of the softest holds I’ve ever had that still keeps my hair in place. Their Pomade and Strong Pomade, which I haven’t tried, add extra strength.
It’s dumb, but I love that this comes in a tube. Malin+Goetz’ Firm Hold Gel is packed with everything from argan to vitamin e, versatile, and adds some great gel texture while keeping things in place.
Maker of my new favorite lip balm and hand soap, if the only factor in these roundups was best-smelling then Firsthand would win... hands down. Their Water Based Pomade offers a strong hold that’s easy to style and restyle.
Update 4/4/18: Port Products’ Texturizing Hair Putty offers a medium hold that’s natural, easy to maintain, and easy to wash out, while adding volume and strength.
