How Good a Deal is the Uber X Capital One Quicksilver Promotion?

Last year Uber and Capital One launched a year-long promotion that gave Quicksilver card members 21.5% back on every Uber ride with no limits. It was one of the best deals of all time, so how does the sequel offer stack up?

This new promotion, which runs through March 2017, gives cardholders $15 toward every tenth Uber ride they pay for with their Quicksilver. The promotion stacks with the 1.5% back the Quicksilver yields on every purchase, and any one of the multitude of coupons Uber has been offering, but not the Uber Commute Card.

So let’s say you take nine $10 Ubers. For that $90:

  • With the Quicksilver, you’d get $1.35 in rewards plus the $15 credit for a total $16.35.
  • With the Chase Sapphire Preferred, you get 2% back on Travel, or $1.80
  • With the Chase Freedom during its 5% on Transportation rotating quarter, you’d get $4.50
  • With last year’s promotion, you’d have gotten $19.35 with your 21.5% back.

The cheaper your Ubers, the better the Quicksilver promotion is. If you take nine $5 uberPOOLS, you’re getting the equivalent of 33% back, plus the extra 1.5%. On the other hand, if you take nine $50 Ubers from the airport, you’re getting $15 plus $6.75 in cash back, which is slightly less than what you would have gotten in the 5% Transportation quarter with Chase Freedom.

Of course, if you had taken nine $50 Ubers from the airport with last year’s promotion, you’d have gotten $97.
